ULU TIRAM, Johor: Located close to Ulu Tiram in Johor, a small, decaying wooden house with an uneven zinc roof is home to a family that the neighbors describe as private and even reclusive.
Locals were horrified to learn on Friday night, May 17, that the family may have ties to the terrorist group Jemaah Islamiyah (JI), following a deadly pre-dawn attack on the town’s police station that claimed the lives of two officers.
The male assailant, age 21, belonged to a family that the Malaysian authorities claim contained members of the JI. The firefight claimed his life. His father is one of five family members who have been taken into custody.
The local police also apprehended two more people who were filing a police report at the time, stating that “it was not logical” for them to be reporting an incident that had allegedly occurred two years prior. This suggests that the two individuals may have been involved in the attack to divert attention away from the police.
Since they reside far within the village, we only see them when they come and go. We don’t know them from before. They showed no indications of being terrorists or radicals,” the woman stated. The hijab that Rohani was donning covered her entire face save her eyes, called a niqab.
