SINGAPORE: Singapore’s Defense Minister Ng Eng Hen stated on Sunday (Jun 2) that the US and China must resolve their differences “squarely by themselves” and do not require outside assistance.
Speaking to reporters on the third and last day of the Shangri-La Dialogue, the premier defense summit in Asia, Dr. Ng expressed his hope that these forums will continue to inspire the US and China.
Dr. Ng reiterated remarks he made to the media following a ministerial roundtable on Saturday, stating that only the United States and China can resolve their differences.
They don’t require outside assistance, and I don’t think it would be helpful. They must handle this head-on on their own,” he continued.
Additionally, Dr. Ng cited statements made by US President Joe Biden expressing his desire for “competition” rather than “conflict” with China. I believe the system is stable overall if they can accomplish that,” Dr. Ng told reporters.
There will inevitably be discrepancies. It’s not going to disappear immediately. Thus, we must find a certain amount of compromise and advancement over the next few decades despite the differences.
Dr. Ng said he didn’t think a small nation could stand up to big powers. Although it is a desirable goal, the country would be “put to the test” if these powers apply pressure.
